We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal AV Designer to join our team and lead the design and delivery of innovative, high-performance audiovisual systems. This leadership role is ideal for a candidate with a strong technical background in AV design, project management capabilities, and a passion for creating exceptional user experiences in built environments.

As a senior member of our Technology team, you will manage complex projects, guide junior staff, and collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients across various market sectors, including corporate, higher education, healthcare, performing arts, and government.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of AV systems, including sound reinforcement, video display, conferencing, digital signage, control systems, and networking infrastructure.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship to junior AV designers and engineers.
  • Serve as primary client contact for AV scope on assigned projects, ensuring clarity of vision, schedule, and deliverables.
  • Develop detailed construction documents, device layouts, schematics, riser diagrams, equipment specifications, and system narratives.
  • Coordinate closely with architectural and MEP disciplines to ensure fully integrated AV solutions.
  • Oversee and perform system commissioning, site inspections, and field coordination.
  • Contribute to the advancement of best practices, design standards, and emerging AV technologies.
  • Participate in business development efforts, including proposal writing, client interviews, and scope development.
  • Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and professional organizations as needed.
  • Travel within the United States.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Drafting experience in Revit.

  • MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 10 years of AV design experience in a consulting or engineering environment.
  • Expertise in AV systems design, signal flow, acoustics, and networking fundamentals.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards (e.g., AVIXA, ANSI/INFOCOMM, AES, IEEE).
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and AV design tools such as EASE, D-Tools, or similar.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and team collaboration.
  • CTS-D or equivalent certification is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Extended hours and weekend work are sometimes required to meet deadlines.
